Strickland, who served on the Canadian National Research Council, also worked at the Lawrance Livermore National Laboratory and Princeton University. The scientist, who joined the University of Waterloo in 1997, together with her team developed high-density laser systems for nonlinear optical studies.

Strickland holds many awards and Honorary Doctorate degrees from national and international scientific institutions and is an Honorary Member of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and Physics Institute.
